CHAPTER 42

BRYCE

I wanted to be mad at Ashley, stalk off, slam a few doors, that kind of thing. At least give her the silent treatment for the rest of the night. But I had to chat with this Schwinnsterama character. I figured Ashley might help find out who it was, plus I might be able to use what she’d done to me later—you know, like to get her to do my chores.

I logged on to the private chat.

“Why’d you choose BLT23 for a screen name?” Ashley said.

I told her. “And I thought it was obscure enough that no one would figure it out.”

“Guess it didn’t work.”

Schwinnsterama123: Find my little present today?

BLT23: People go to jail for breaking into homes.

Schwinnsterama123: People who withhold evidence get in trouble too. Why didn’t you take it to the police?

BLT23: Because I don’t think Mr. Forster did anything.

Schwinnsterama123: I can tell you right now—you’re wrong. The guy’s a crook. He cheats.

BLT23: You knew the box was in the trash. Why didn’t YOU tell the police?

Schwinnsterama123: You and your sister are the hot detectives. They’d believe you.

BLT23: What team are you on?

Schwinnsterama123: What’s important is that you turn that box in to the police and tell them where you found it.

BLT23: Or what?

Schwinnsterama123: I can make things very uncomfortable for you and your sister.

BLT23: You’d better hope the police can’t trace you. Threats over the Internet are felonies.
